About Us
HOLY ROSARY COLLEGE (HOROCO) is a mission school founded by the Catholic Church in 1956. Originally, it was managed by the congregation of the Holy Rosary Sisters till the war broke-out. The war had a destabilizing effect on all aspects of the society but most negatively impacted was in the area of Education. The Missions who were pioneers in education lost their schools to government. because of the absence of mission influence and intent, the character mounding of the students and discipline were eroded, lawlessness and unwholesome behaviours were prevalent. There was loss of the intent of the Catholic Missionaries for establishing such schools, resulting into a very perverse society, generally, with its attendant loss of high ethical and societal values. HOLY ROSARY SECONDARY SCHOOL as it was then named fell victim to the prevailing circumstance. However, the break-down of the value system occasioned hue and cry for the return of schools to their original owners for proper management. Thus, spirited efforts were made by the Catholic mission of Port Harcourt Diocese, to recover such schools from successive Governments: – Military and civilian. By the Grace of God, this dream became a reality in the year, 200S, the final and formal hand-over, however, was in September 2008, when a skeletal staff, headed by Mrs. R. C. Ofoluwa was dispatched to take-over from the Government administration. HOLY ROSARY SECONDARY SCHOOL was inherited in a very dilapidated state. It could not be imagined, that thousands of Young girls graduated yearly from an institution of such a nature. Work started in earnest with the few staff, including my humble self, Barr (Mrs.). Efika, as the vice-principal administration. Initially, the problems seemed insurmountable. With long years of infrastructural decay, environmental rot and of course the misinformed attitude of the existing students, the challenges were indeed enormous. The task of reorientation was Herculean, but with perseverance, commitment and dedication from completely new members of staff, some students who viewed our efforts with seriousness, parents who were eager to see a change in the lives of their wards and most importantly, the untiring efforts of the Catholic Education Board, we are able to steer the ship of change in the institution, hence the new name “HOLY ROSARY COLLEGE” We have equally opened up channels of communications between us, parents, students and general public for information on behaviours of our students even outside the school. The school’s secret police is very effective in monitoring students. Students of HOLY ROSARY COLLEGE are mindful of their behaviours outside the school. No student would want to be publicly disgraced for misbehaving anywhere. Discipline is our watch-word. Parents and students are happy with our disciplinary measures and approach. The nucleus of success in life is discipline and then hard work. This is emphasized at HOLY ROSARY COLLEGE.
